integration into a broken system is not liberation

Integration was presented as the progressive answer to segregation. But it was rarely asked what, exactly, minorities were being integrated into.

The systems they were absorbed into, the schools, the institutions, the economies, the legal frameworks, were not neutral structures that had been waiting to include them. They were systems built on the same ideological foundations that had excluded them in the first place. The architecture hadn’t changed; just the guest list.

This matters because it reframes the question. If integration is entry into an unreformed system, then the struggle doesn’t end at the door, it just moves inside. The fight shifts from let us in to why does it still feel the same in here?. And because the structure itself is rarely named, that second question is much harder to answer and much easier to dismiss.

Integration without transformation is a change of location, not a change of condition.
